Urgent
Call to Action: Protect Women's Rights in Afghanistan from Taliban Suppression
H.
E. Mr. António Guterres
Secretary-General
United Nations
New York, NY 10017
Your Excellency,
We
write to you today with a heavy heart, as an observant the heartbreaking and
alarming situation unfolding in Afghanistan. As you are aware, the elimination
of women's rights, specifically in education and the workplace has become a
major focus for the Taliban in Afghanistan. This is not just a concern for the
women and girls of Afghanistan, but for the entire world.
The
world cannot turn a blind eye to the atrocities being committed against Afghan
women and girls. Women's participation in education, politics, media, business,
and the nonprofit sector has been banned, and they are being treated as slaves
in their own homes, forced to abide by the Taliban dress code. The consequences
of the Taliban's actions are already being felt in the country's economy, with
women and girls being removed from the educational sector and the workforce.
Female
educators, women's rights activists, and women protestors who stand up for
their basic human rights are being punished and persecuted, with some even
being shot, stoned, whipped, raped, and killed. This is a complete violation of
Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that all
human beings are born "free and equal in dignity and rights."
It is unacceptable that, after years of progress in
female empowerment since 2002, Afghan women and girls are once again being
denied their basic human rights. They are not free human beings and are being
robbed of their identity and freedom.
We urge you to recognize this emergency and
take action. It is time for the world to come together to protect the human
rights of Afghan women and girls. We must stand with Afghan women and girls and
let them know that they are not alone in this fight. The United Nations and the
world must take immediate action to ensure that they are given the freedom and
equality that they deserve.
The world cannot allow the Taliban to
continue their systematic elimination of women and girls from the educational
sector and the workforce. Failure to act now will be a deep disrespect to
Afghan women and girls and to the Afghan community.
Please
accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Sincerely,
Minhaz
