The European Union has issued a significant acknowledgement of the deepening insecurity faced by religious and vulnerable minority communities across Bangladesh. In its recent communication responding to my urgent briefing of 24 November 2025, the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia (DSAS) formally recognised the “increasing threats and acts of violence against religious and other vulnerable minorities.”

This response marks an important moment of international attention and validates the concerns raised by civil society and human rights defenders regarding the rapidly deteriorating situation on the ground.
๐ช๐บ 1. The EU Confirms Escalating Violence as a Matter of Deep Concern
The Delegation noted that it is “with deep concern” that the EU observes the rising violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh.
This language is not diplomatic routine — it reflects a heightened level of alarm and indicates that the crisis is being treated as a matter requiring urgent, sustained international scrutiny.

This confirms that:
-
Bangladesh’s internal developments are now subject to formal EU human rights oversight.
-
The crisis is recognised as structural—not isolated or episodic.
-
Continued monitoring means further diplomatic action remains possible if conditions worsen.
๐ค 3. Minority Rights Are Central to EU–Bangladesh Diplomatic Dialogue
The response reiterates that concerns regarding minority protections have been consistently raised within the Good Governance and Human Rights Dialogue between the EU and Bangladesh.

This demonstrates that:
-
The EU recognises the seriousness and systemic nature of the abuses.
-
These issues are being escalated at formal diplomatic and intergovernmental levels.
-
Bangladesh’s treatment of minorities is understood as part of its international legal and normative obligations.
๐️ 4. The EU Calls on the Interim Government to Uphold Peaceful, Inclusive, Multi-Confessional Coexistence
The Delegation emphasised that the European Parliament will continue pressing the interim government to ensure peaceful, inclusive, multi-confessional coexistence, and to fully safeguard the rights and security of all religious and vulnerable minorities.

This statement reflects:
-
A clear expectation of immediate and decisive action from authorities.
-
International defence of Bangladesh’s diverse and pluralistic identity.
-
A growing consensus that minority protection is essential to national stability.
๐ Why This Matters
The EU’s response aligns with the documented evidence presented by human rights organisations, journalists, and affected communities, including the alarming rise in attacks, land dispossession, intimidation of activists, and erosion of rule-of-law structures reported since 2024.

It demonstrates that:
-
The global community is not silent.
-
The European Union is watching closely — and responding with seriousness.
-
The suffering of Bangladesh’s minorities is gaining the international visibility it urgently requires.
๐ Acknowledgement
I express my sincere appreciation to the European Union for recognising the gravity of the ongoing crisis, for acknowledging the voices of Bangladesh’s most vulnerable communities, and for reaffirming its commitment to human rights, democratic principles, and accountability.
The path forward for Bangladesh must be rooted in:
-
justice,
-
equal citizenship,
-
rule of law, and
-
protection of every individual, regardless of religion, identity, or background.
Bangladesh’s future — and its democratic credibility — depends on its ability to safeguard the dignity and security of all its people.
