A Burned Hand, A Nation’s Unhealed Wound: Documenting Torture and Communal Violence in Bangladesh

This burned hand belongs to a survivor of communal violence—
but symbolically, it represents the deep scars carried by an entire persecuted community.

Such attacks—often involving arson, beatings, sexual violence, and forced displacement—
are rarely investigated, and seldom prosecuted, in Bangladesh.

The absence of accountability not only emboldens perpetrators but also sends a message to victims:
you do not matter.

Documented patterns across the past decade reveal:

  • Repeated mob violence targeting minority households,

  • police inaction or delayed response,

  • politically connected groups acting with impunity,

  • victims deprived of justice or compensation.

The European Union has already acknowledged these patterns in earlier Human Rights reports.
What is urgently needed now is external monitoring, high-level diplomatic pressure, and mechanisms to protect individuals at risk who have no domestic avenues for safety.
