Condolence Statement on the Passing of Khaleda Zia

I express my deepest condolences on the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Her death marks the close of a defining chapter in Bangladesh’s modern political history.

Begum Khaleda Zia was a central figure in the country’s long and often difficult democratic journey. Rising from a private life into public leadership under extraordinary circumstances, she played a pivotal role in resisting authoritarian rule, restoring parliamentary democracy, and shaping competitive political pluralism in Bangladesh. As the country’s first elected female Prime Minister, her leadership carried both symbolic and substantive significance for women’s political participation in South Asia.

Her political life unfolded amid intense polarisation, institutional fragility, and recurring cycles of repression. In her later years, she endured prolonged incarceration, restrictions on medical care, and sustained political exclusion—conditions that raised serious concerns from a human-rights and rule-of-law perspective. These experiences form an inseparable part of her legacy and underscore the broader challenges Bangladesh continues to face in ensuring due process, humane treatment, and democratic accountability for all political actors.

At this moment of national mourning, it is essential to rise above partisan divisions and reflect soberly on the lessons of history. The passing of a former head of government should reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect political rights, uphold media freedom, safeguard minorities, and reject the use of state power as an instrument of repression. Democracies are strengthened not by silencing opponents, but by guaranteeing dignity, justice, and equal protection under the law.

I extend my sincere sympathy to her family, colleagues, and supporters, as well as to all citizens of Bangladesh who view this loss as a moment of profound historical significance. May her passing serve as a reminder that democratic progress ultimately depends on restraint, accountability, and respect for fundamental rights.

May she rest in peace.
